Aleksandr Chuchalin is a Soviet and Russian pulmonologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences (1974), Professor (1975), Academician (1986) and Vice President (1987-1990) of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1986), academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2013). Director of the Research Institute of Pulmonology (1990-2017), Head of the Department of Hospital Therapy of the Pediatric Faculty of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, Vice-President of the National Medical Chamber (2010).
In 1957 he entered the 2nd Moscow Order of Lenin State Medical Institute. N.I. Pirogova. From 1963 to 1965 he was a clinical intern, from 1965 to 1967 – a graduate student. Since 2010 Vice President and Member of the Presidium of the National Medical Chamber.

Chairman of the Russian National Committee on Bioethics and the RAS Commission on Scientific Ethics (since 2017).

He is a member of the editorial board of the First Medical Channel. Honorary member of the Cuban and Czech Academies of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the East-West Academy, the Ramazini Academy. One of the founders of the Russian school of pulmonology. 40 doctoral and 116 master’s theses were defended under his supervision. Author of 17 monographs and textbooks, many scientific articles in Russian and foreign journals.
